After some long delays I arrived at Madrid around midnight. I was famished by the time I arrived at my hostel and so a girl from my room and I decided to go for some dinner/breakfast. We ended up walking around the streets and not getting back to our hostel until 4am. Honestly though Madrid is so alive at night, there are people of all ages awake and about. Drinking, eating and enjoying the night! Upon arriving back to our hostel there was a group of boys playing traditional Spanish music next door with trumpets and horns. It was so amazing and a crowd gathered and people danced in the street!
After a very brief nap we woke up and gathered for a 3 hour walking tour around Madrid. We saw more of the historical side of Madrid and ended with a traditional lunch of Paella(rice cooked for a long time with spices, veggies, and traditionally seafood)! After lunch we hurried back to the hostel and made our way to Reina Sofia, modern art museum in Madrid.
I saw Pablo Picasso's masterpiece, Guernica. The painting takes up an entire wall/room! After the museum we headed back to our hostel to meet up for a night out and a meal of traditional tapas! Another girl I met and I ended up not getting back until 5am! at which time we decided it was back out for some churros con chocolate :) which is essentially the densest hot chocolate you've ever had and some yummy churros to dip it in! Muy bueno!!!
Needless to say I feel like I haven't slept in forever so today I slept in and then headed to Real Jardin Botanico de Madrid(the Botanical Gardens). After a relaxing afternoon reading in the sun and gardens I prepare for my flight to Alicante tomorrow morning!
